AASL Standards and Competencies
The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has established national competencies for candidates pursuing certification as a School Library Media Specialist. The goal of the AASL is to ensure that media center programs are developed that will "ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information." The School Library Media Specialist must take on several diverse roles in order to accomplish this goal. The AASL has organized these competencies into four standards:
Standard 1: Use of Information and Ideas
Standard 2: Teaching and Learning
Standard 3: Collaboration and Leadership
Standard 4: Program Administration
